SURG 1102 - Orientation to Surgical Technology
Credit hours: 1
Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program.
Course Description: An introduction to principles, techniques and issues in the operating room environment. Topics include professional management and healthcare facility information.
Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- Common biopsychosocial needs of the surgical patient.
- Common issues surrounding death and dying.
- Proper surgical attire.
- Correct procedure for review of patient chart and surgical consent.
- Proper identification, transport and transfer of the surgical patient..
- Proper preoperative physical preparation of the surgical patient including positioning, urinary catheterization, and skin preparation.
- Necessary supplies, equipment and instrumentation for common surgical procedures.
- Professional management skills appropriate to the operating room including teamwork and communication.
- Appropriate employability skills to seek a position and an entry-level surgical technologist.
