SURG 1102 - Orientation to Surgical Technology

Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program.

Course Description:
An introduction to principles, techniques and issues in the operating room environment. Topics include professional management and healthcare facility information.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

Common biopsychosocial needs of the surgical patient.
Common issues surrounding death and dying.
Proper surgical attire.
Correct procedure for review of patient chart and surgical consent.
Proper identification, transport and transfer of the surgical patient..
Proper preoperative physical preparation of the surgical patient including positioning, urinary catheterization, and skin preparation.
Necessary supplies, equipment and instrumentation for common surgical procedures.
Professional management skills appropriate to the operating room including teamwork and communication.
Appropriate employability skills to seek a position and an entry-level surgical technologist.
