SURG 2420 - Surgical Patient Care II

Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program and SURG 1410 Surgical Technology and Patient Care I
Course Description: Surgical Technology and Patient Care II builds on content learned in SURG 1410. Students continue with more in depth study of surgical team practice, patient-care concepts and practices. Students continue studies in surgical procedures, incisions, wound healing, operating, pathology and common applications along with application of surgical patient care in the lab.
Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- Proper preparation and disinfection of the operating suite
- Proper use of supplies, furniture, equipment and instrumentation
- Asepsis and sterile technique
- Hand hygiene and the surgical hand scrub
- Gowning and gloving oneself and others
- Surgical counts
- Skin preparation and application of sterile drapes.
- Perioperative case management in the scrub and assistant circulator roles
- Abdominal incisions, hemostasis and exposure
- Wound closure, surgical dressings, and wound healing.
- Tissues replacement materials
- Emergency patient situations
