MDA 1060 - Clinical Procedures I

Course Description:
This course offers a practical exploration of clinical procedures utilized in a physician’s office.  Included are the skills necessary for:  implement aseptic technique, sterilizing instruments and equipment, set-up and assisting with patient exam and/or minor surgery, standard precautions as they relate to blood-borne pathogens, and the knowledge and skills to accurately perform routine laboratory tests commonly performed in a physician’s office.  

Student Learning Outcomes:
UNIT #1      INFECTION CONTROL

  1. Participate in Blood borne pathogen training:  Remove Soiled Gloves.
  2. Perform Medical Aseptic Hand Wash.
  3. Select appropriate PPE’s demonstrate proper robing and disrobing
  4. Perform Compliance Reporting based on public health statutes.

UNIT #2 PATIENT ASSESSMENT

  1. Obtain patient information and document patient care accurately
  2. Respond to nonverbal communication

UNIT #3 PATIENT EDUCATION

  1. Develop a list of community resources for patient’s healthcare needs.
  2. Facilitate Referrals in the roll of patient navigator.

UNIT #4 ASSISTING WITH THE PRIMARY PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

  1. Use Proper body mechanics
  2. Assist provider with physical exam demonstrating correct positioning of patient

UNIT #5 NUTRITION

  1. Coach a patient about how to understand food labels
  2. Prepare a (appetizer or dessert) with emphasis on patient education of glycemic index

UNIT  #6 DERMATOLOGY

  1. Recognize thermal and cold injuries
  2. Discuss how to assist with a dermatologic exam
  3. Summarize allergy testing procedures.

UNIT #7 GASTROENTEROLOGY

  1. Describe the primary functions of the GI system
  2. Differentiate among the abdominal quadrants and regions.
  3. Summarize the medical assistant’s role in the GI exam
  4. Perform a telephone screening of a patient with GI complaints
  5. Instruct a patient on how to perform a collection for fecal exam
  6. Perform a fecal occult blood test

UNIT #8 GERIATRICS

  1. Identify the stereotypes and myths associated with aging
  2. Summarize the major related diseases and disorders faced by older patients
  3. Describe carious screening tools for dementia, depression, and malnutrition in aging adults
  4. Understand the sensorimotor changes of aging

UNIT # 9 NEUROLOGY AND MENTAL HEALTH

  1. Differentiate between the central and peripheral nervous systems
  2. Identify the various types of epilepsy
  3. Differentiate among common mental health disorders
  4. Describe the common diagnostic procedures for the nervous system
  5. Patient education in a neurologic and mental health practice
  6. Describe the dynamics of brain and spinal cord injuries

UNIT #10 ENDOCRINE

  1. Explain the mechanism of hormone action
  2. Describe the diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus
  3. Outline the treatment plan and management of the different types of diabetes mellitus (prediabetes, diabetes type I, II and gestational diabetes)
  4. Perform blood glucose screening with a glucometer
