Course Description: This course offers a practical exploration of clinical procedures utilized in a physician’s office. Included are the skills necessary for: implement aseptic technique, sterilizing instruments and equipment, set-up and assisting with patient exam and/or minor surgery, standard precautions as they relate to blood-borne pathogens, and the knowledge and skills to accurately perform routine laboratory tests commonly performed in a physician’s office.
Student Learning Outcomes: UNIT #1 INFECTION CONTROL
- Participate in Blood borne pathogen training: Remove Soiled Gloves.
- Perform Medical Aseptic Hand Wash.
- Select appropriate PPE’s demonstrate proper robing and disrobing
- Perform Compliance Reporting based on public health statutes.
UNIT #2 PATIENT ASSESSMENT
- Obtain patient information and document patient care accurately
- Respond to nonverbal communication
UNIT #3 PATIENT EDUCATION
- Develop a list of community resources for patient’s healthcare needs.
- Facilitate Referrals in the roll of patient navigator.
UNIT #4 ASSISTING WITH THE PRIMARY PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
- Use Proper body mechanics
- Assist provider with physical exam demonstrating correct positioning of patient
UNIT #5 NUTRITION
- Coach a patient about how to understand food labels
- Prepare a (appetizer or dessert) with emphasis on patient education of glycemic index
UNIT #6 DERMATOLOGY
- Recognize thermal and cold injuries
- Discuss how to assist with a dermatologic exam
- Summarize allergy testing procedures.
UNIT #7 GASTROENTEROLOGY
- Describe the primary functions of the GI system
- Differentiate among the abdominal quadrants and regions.
- Summarize the medical assistant’s role in the GI exam
- Perform a telephone screening of a patient with GI complaints
- Instruct a patient on how to perform a collection for fecal exam
- Perform a fecal occult blood test
UNIT #8 GERIATRICS
- Identify the stereotypes and myths associated with aging
- Summarize the major related diseases and disorders faced by older patients
- Describe carious screening tools for dementia, depression, and malnutrition in aging adults
- Understand the sensorimotor changes of aging
UNIT # 9 NEUROLOGY AND MENTAL HEALTH
- Differentiate between the central and peripheral nervous systems
- Identify the various types of epilepsy
- Differentiate among common mental health disorders
- Describe the common diagnostic procedures for the nervous system
- Patient education in a neurologic and mental health practice
- Describe the dynamics of brain and spinal cord injuries
UNIT #10 ENDOCRINE
- Explain the mechanism of hormone action
- Describe the diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus
- Outline the treatment plan and management of the different types of diabetes mellitus (prediabetes, diabetes type I, II and gestational diabetes)
- Perform blood glucose screening with a glucometer
