Course Description:
The course provides the student opportunity to prepare for entering the externship, as well as preparation for employment application. Students will critique professional appearance, prepare a professional resume, develop pre/post-interview correspondence, and practice interviewing techniques.  In addition, the student will be provided strategies for planning short/long term career goals.
(Clinical Externship) This course provides the medical assistant student with practical training/work experience in the physician’s office/clinic.  Externship provides the medical assisting students with an opportunity for application and reinforcement of principles and techniques in an ambulatory care setting.    The clinical practicum allows the student to become involved in a work situation at a professional level of technical application.  The student is supervised and evaluated for work performance and professional manner in both the administrative and clinical areas.  In addition, the student must develop a “practice profile” of the extern site.

UNIT #1 CAREER AND DEVELOPMENT LIFE SKILLS

  1. Describe the four personality traits that are most important to employers
  2. Explain the three areas that need to be examined to determine one’s strengths and skills
  3. Do the following related to finding a job:
    1. Explain the two best job search methods
    2. Discuss traditional job search methods
    3. Discuss the importance of being organized in our job search
  4. Discuss the three types of resume formats create cover letter and resume
  5. Discuss how to complete and online job application
  6. Do the following related to a job interview
    1. List and describe the four phases of the interview process
    2. List and discuss legal and illegal questions
    3. Create a thank you note for an interview
    4. Practice interview skills

UNIT #2 CLINICAL EXTERNSHIP

  1. Full-time uncompensated medical office/clinic work experience.  
  2. The ability to demonstrate the skills developed during classroom training.
  3. The ability to continually improve skills and the capability to manage increased responsibility throughout the externship.
  4. The ability to receive instructions from a supervisor and perform accordingly.
  5. The ability to cope with a variety of interoffice relationships in a professional environment (team member).
  6. The understanding of what is expected on the job with regards to attitude, professionalism, and work performance.
