Course Description: The Externship course allows students to gain hands-on practice in a healthcare facility performing the administrative tasks they will encounter in the medical front office.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Utilize basic knowledge and understanding of confidentiality and HIPAA regulations while performing administrative activities in the healthcare setting.
- Schedule patient appointments according to office rules based on patient need, facility availability, and physician preference.
- Schedule inpatient and outpatient admissions and procedures.
- Prepare a daily patient list.
- File medical records.
- Complete daily bank deposit ticket.
- Reconcile a bank statement.
- Post entries on a daily ledger sheet.
- Perform accounts receivable and accounts payable procedures.
- Prepare monthly patient bills.
- Perform collection procedures.
- Processes daily balances and deposits.
- Process refunds.
- Post nonsufficient fund checks.
- Post collection agency payments.
- Acquire preauthorization for procedures, managed care referrals, and pre-certifications.
- Apply the correct procedural and diagnosis codes for services provided.
- Prepare an insurance claim form for Medicare, Medicaid, managed care carrier, and private health insurance carrier.
- Use a fee schedule to correctly calculate payment for services.
- Record a variety of telephone messages left on an answering machine.
- Set up and maintain patient files.
- Perform inventory of equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance of administrative equipment.
- Transcribe dictation from several people consisting of medical documents and general correspondence.
- Demonstrate understanding of the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Exhibit ability to obtain information from the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Apply legal and ethical principles in healthcare.
- Reflect respect for self and others through dress, identification of self and role, and through the notification of tardiness/absences.
- Communicate effectively verbally, nonverbally, in writing and/or through information technology.
- Communicate information pertinent to patient care to appropriate personnel.
- Use language expected of a professional when communicating with other professionals.
- Utilize therapeutic communication techniques when communicating with patients and their families.
