Course Description: This course is designed to teach students to look up numerous codes for procedures in a medical office or hospital and the diagnosis the physician has indicated on the encounter form. Students use the ICD-10 book for locating the diagnosis and the CPT book for locating the procedures. The students also utilize online sites on the internet to find codes.
Student Learning Outcomes: Course Competencies:
- Identify 5 steps in the healthcare claim billing and payment cycle
- Explain the ICD-10 format and locate the correct ICD code
- Label the primary diagnosis and coexisting conditions
- Use a five step process to analyze diagnoses and locate the correct ICD-9 CM code
- Find correct procedure codes using the current CPT book
- Name the three key factors that influence the selection of Evaluation and Management codes
- Compare and contrast referral and consultations services
- Recognize surgical packages and laboratory panels that are codes as single procedures
- Compare inpatient and outpatient hospital services
- Code immunizations
