Course Description: This course is designed to facilitate the student in gaining detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the head and neck region.
Student Learning Outcomes: UNIT #1 BONES AND ASSOCIATED LANDMARKS
- Locate and identify the cranial bones.
- Identify the landmarks of the cranium.
- Identify the major foramen of the cranium.
- Locate the bones of the face.
- Identify the landmarks of the maxilla and the mandible.
- Differentiate between the bone of the maxilla and the mandible.
- Identify the foramen of the mandible and maxilla.
- Define alveolar process.
- Describe the two movements of the temporomandibular joint using the terms: articular disc, articular tubercle, glenoid fossa, condyle, synovial cavity.
- Discuss probable causes of TMJ pain.
- Locate and identify the major bones.
- Identify the major sutures of the cranium.
UNIT #2 MUSCLES
- Identify the muscles of mastication.
- Describe what part of a muscle is the origin and insertion, and what their functions are.
- Label the muscles of mastication.
- Identify the functions of muscles of facial expression.
- Describe the musculature of the tongue.
- List the functions of the tongue.
- Locate and identify the papilla of the tongue.
- Locate the taste buds.
UNIT #3 VASCULAR AND LYMPHATIC SUPPLY AND DRAINAGE
- Describe the vascular supply to the head and neck area.
- Recognize and/or identify the branches of the external carotid arteries.
- Recognize and/or identify veins of the head and neck area.
- Describe the lymphatic drainage of the head and neck area and identify the following structures: submental and submandibular lymph nodes, superior deep cervical nodes.
- Discuss how an infection may spread from the oral cavity to the chest.
UNIT #4 THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
- Name the twelve cranial nerves.
- Identify and locate the major branches of the trigeminal nerve and its subdivisions.
- Discuss the innervation of the mandibular and maxillary teeth and associated structure of the oral cavity.
- Describe the nerves and areas involved in general and special sensation of the tongue.
- Identify the innervation of the head and neck area by the facial nerve and its branches.
- Discuss the innervation by the vagus nerve in the oral cavity.
- Discuss the innervation by the hypoglossal nerve.
