Program Description: A.A.S. Degree in Professional Music:

The Associate of Applied Science in Professional Music is designed to address the educational needs of individuals who desire to enter or advance their career within the professional music workforce.

The Professional Music Associate of Applied Science program prepares students to become working musicians in the local entertainment industry. The program includes a foundation in music theory and entertainment industry practices as well as individual instruction and regular performance opportunities to prepare students for a variety of careers in popular music, including church music, performing, and songwriting.

Graduates of the program should be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective performance skills as a solo artist, as part of an ensemble, and/or as a music director;
  • Collaborate appropriately with others in professional music settings;
  • Apply a broad-based knowledge of music production technology and music theory to performances and/or other professional music settings;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the application of critical listening and practical audio engineering skills.

Program Outcomes and Assessment

Program Outcome 1: Demonstrate effective performance skills as a solo artist, as part of an ensemble, and/or as a music director.

 

  • Student will be required to perform a jury for each semester. Upon the completion of the jury, music faculty will complete a rubric to document proficiency.
  • Student will be required to participate in end of semester live music performances sponsored by the Performing Arts faculty. Upon the completion of the performance, music faculty will complete a rubric to document proficiency.

 

Program Outcome 2: Collaborate appropriately with others in professional music settings.
 

  • Faculty who teach ensembles and other identified coursework will complete faculty observation forms to document collaboration skills.

 

Program Outcomes 3 and 4: Apply a broad-based knowledge of music production technology and music theory to performances and/or other professional music settings. Demonstrate proficiency in the application of critical listening and practical audio engineering skills.

  • Student will be required to submit an ePortfolio at the end of the program to be juried by a fulltime faculty member and member of the Advisory Committee. An assessment instrument (rubric) will be designed. Portfolio elements will include:
    • Video and audio recordings of their live performance abilities, which will prove critical to their success in the industry. 
    • Audio tracks as part of their studio experience
    • An EPK (Electronic Press Kit) that demonstrates a mastery of social media, music technology tools, video, and use of cell phone for marketing
