Academic Program Inventory Title:

A.A.S. in Chemical Engineering Technology

CIP Code: SOC Code:
15.0615 Chemical Engineering Technologist 19-4031.00 Chemical Technicians
  51-9011.00 Chemical Operators

Program Description:

The Associate of Applied Sciences in Chemical Engineering Technology prepares graduates for a position as process operator/technician in a chemical manufacturing facility. Using fundamental chemistry and basic algebra, students will develop an understanding of the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of chemical processing equipment from valves and pumps to more complex processing systems such as gas absorption and chemical reactors.  Emphasis is placed on industrial safety and troubleshooting of typical chemical processes while incorporating real world case studies, teamwork, and effective communication skills.  Other topics include blueprint interpretation, CAD design, electrical and mechanical fundamentals, and using computers to control processes and collect data. The program accomplishes these tasks by combining classroom study with practical hands-on-experience in the labs associated with the coursework.

Program Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this program, students will be able to -

  1. Apply mathematics, basic sciences, and technology to solve problems appropriate to the chemical engineering technology.
  2. Identify, analyze, and solve narrowly defined chemical engineering technology problems.
  3. Apply written, oral, and graphical communication skills in both technical and non- technical environments; and identify and use appropriate technical literature.
  4. Address professional and ethical responsibilities, including a respect for diversity.
  5. Solve technical problems by the industrial application of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry; physics and process stoichiometry.
  6. Apply the concepts of chemical engineering unit operations such as mass transfer, heat transfer, distillation, and evaporation to the design, operation, and maintenance of chemical processes.
  7. Operate, test, and inspect chemical process equipment in accordance with appropriate safety, health and environmental considerations and regulations
  8. Demonstrate a commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
  9. Apply the concepts of chemical engineering unit operations such as mass transfer, heat transfer, distillation, and evaporation to the design, operation, and maintenance of chemical processes
  10. Apply the principles of thermodynamics; process control and instrumentation, computer applications and materials science to the design, operation, and maintenance of chemical processes.
