Collision Repair Technology

Program Description:

The Collision Repair Technician program is designed to provide the student with a thorough understanding of the materials, methods, and refinishing techniques used in the repair and restoration of a damaged automobile body.  Through class study, audiovisual presentations, and actual “hands-on” performance tasks the student will learn the procedures necessary for the proper repair and refinishing of metal, fiberglass, and plastic components used in both unibody and conventional automobile construction.

Program Outcomes:

1. Students will obtain the appropriate safety skills and knowledge in all the areas of the program that are needed to use the Collision Repair tools and equipment safely and effectively.
2. Students will obtain the latest repair methods and techniques on automotive surfaces such as metal, plastic and fiberglass panels. 
3. Students will obtain the appropriate hands on training, along with lab/classroom experience to prepare them for employment in the Collision Repair industry.
4. Students will be able to analyze the damage on an automobile body and/or frame, and repair & refinish it to its pre-accident condition.

**Master Status Requirements:

Those who are certified in tests B2 - B5 are recognized as ASE-Certified Master Collision Repair Technicians. NOTE: B6 is NOT a requirement for Master Collision Repair Technician Status.

TCAT Collision Repair Programs adhere to the recognized NATEF standards for tasks to be completed.  

All tasks have a priority rating. NATEF Standards recognize that program content requirements vary by program type and regional employment needs. Therefore, flexibility has been built into the NATEF task list by assigning each task a priority type. Items on the Task List are broken down into two categories: 

1. High Priority - Individual (HP-I) - is a task that requires students to demonstrate hands-on competency to the instructor on an individual (one-to-one) basis. Competency in HP-I tasks will indicate to employers that the graduate is skilled in that area.

NATEF accreditation requires 95% of the HP-I tasks be included in the curriculum. 

2. High Priority - Group (HP-G) - is a task that can be taught through the use of video, demonstration, team training, etc. Students should be tested on the information presented but are not required to demonstrate hands-on competency on an individual (one-to-one) basis. Competency in HP-G tasks will indicate to employers that the graduate has been tested on the information but may not have “hands-on” competency skills. 

NATEF accreditation requires 90% of the HP-G tasks be included in the curriculum.
