Other Courses HIMT Students might take that are deemed appropriate to complete the A.A.S. in HIM include the following:

First Year Student Success Course                                                                     1-3 credits

The following course was developed at the request of faculty in the Surgical Technology program.  This course will be taught by HIMT when requested to support other allied health programs.  However, it is not intended to be used for the A.A.S. in HIM.

HIMT 1308 - Introduction to Health-Related Professions

Please note the following requirements for developing curriculum proposals or revising existing programs:

  1. In order for a technical certificate to be embedded within the degree program, and thus require only one program evaluation every 5-year cycle, all courses in the certificate program must also be a part of the degree program.
  2. The faculty may choose to develop different “tracks” or “pathways” within the degree.  For example, the A.A.S. in HIM might include a medical coding pathway that supports embedding the Medical Coding Technical Certificate or another pathway to support embedding the Medical Insurance Specialist Technical Certificate.
  3. All technical certificates should provide the shortest path to developing the skills recognized as supporting specific workforce needs and benefiting the student by enhancing employment opportunities.  Therefore, a reduction in required semester credit hours should be considered when existing certificate programs are revised.  If additional credit hours are to be added, this will require additional justification and support from healthcare employers of these graduates.
