AHM 1010 - Nursing Assistant

Course Description:
This course prepares a person for gainful employment in a healthcare setting.  The education shall be in an organized program with planned learning experiences in a logical sequence. Both theory and clinical will enable the learner to obtain knowledge, skills, and attitude to function within the defined job scope of the nursing assistant.  Broad areas of learning shall include communication skills, safety, legal and ethical issues, basic anatomy and physiology, nutrition, basic nursing principles and skills. Upon completion, the graduate is prepared to complete the Nurse Aide (CNA) certification exam. 

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this content area, the student will be able to: 

 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the healthcare environment  

  1. Identify the roles of the health team and the nursing team   

  1. Identify agencies that employ multi-skilled workers   

  1. Demonstrate understanding of client rights and legal issues   

  1. Demonstrate use of effective communication and interpersonal skills  

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of mental health, social service, and holistic client needs 

  1. Demonstrate how to care for client’s when death is imminent  

  1. Demonstrate understanding of mental health problems including but not limited to anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, psychotic disorders, affective disorders, organic/inorganic disorders. 

  1. Identify common accidents in facilities and ways to prevent them 

  1. Understand the significance of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) 

  1. Describe safety guidelines for sharps and biohazard containers 

  1. Identify types of and problems associated with restraints 

  1. Demonstrate understanding of restraint alternatives 

  1. Identify what must be done if a restraint is ordered 

  1. List safety guidelines for oxygen use 

  1. Identify safety guidelines for intravenous (IV) lines 

  1. Demonstrate understanding of fire safety and explain the RACE and PASS acronyms 

  1. List general safety steps for working in a healthcare facility 

  1. Define important words in this chapter 

  1. Demonstrate how to respond to medical emergencies 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of first aid procedures 

  1. Explain the nursing assistant’s role on a code team 

  1. Describe guidelines for responding to disasters
