MOA 2070 - Clinical Procedures II

Course Description:
The Clinical Procedures II course allows students to gain hands-on practice in a healthcare facility performing clinical tasks they will encounter in the workplace as a medical assistant. This course is a structured educational experience that integrates theory-based learning with current and relevant work experiences which are related to the student’s career goal and employability skills.  

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student, under the supervision of the instructor, will be able to accomplish the following objectives as assigned by the instructor including, but not limited to the following skills lab competencies. All students must receive a satisfactory evaluation for program completion.   

  1. Observe HIPAA guidelines in the care of all patients.  

  1. Effectively and appropriately interact/communicate with all others on the healthcare team.    

  1. Assist with general physical examination  

  1. Assist with specialty examination  

  1. Assist with surgical interventions (sebaceous cyst removal, toenail removal, colposcopy, cryosurgery, etc.)  

  1. Review provider’s instructions/plan of care with patients  

  1. Dispose of biohazardous materials according to OSHA standards.   

  1. Identify, document, and report abnormal signs and symptoms.   

  1. Observe/identify the therapeutic techniques used in the care of psychiatric clients.  

  1. Identify precautions used with the suicidal client.  

  1. Identify resources available for the client with a chemical dependency.  

  1. Assist with crisis intervention as indicated.  

  1. Assess for and assist with precipitous labor and delivery.   

  1. Participate in timing uterine contractions.  

  1. Observe procedures performed in labor room to prepare for delivery.  

  1. Assist with instructing the client on the proper postpartum care.   

  1. Observe the psychosocial behavior of the family during the postpartum period.  

  1. Assist with various types of infant feeding.    

  1. Observe and assist parents in bonding techniques.  

  1. Take and record: temperature, heart rate, respirations and report abnormal values according to facility policy.  

  1. Weigh and measure infant.  

  1. Provide care instructions for the normal newborn including but not limited to:  

  • Cord care   

  • Bath  

  • Transporting infant to client for feeding  

  • Feeding and burping infant (i.e. breast or bottle)  

  • Diaper care  

  1. Obtain and record vital signs following facility protocol according to the client’s growth and development.   

  1. Observe safety measures appropriate for growth and development.  

  1. Assist in assessment of nutritional status and dietary needs specific to the developmental stage.  

  1. Demonstrate the ability to perform treatments/procedures specific to pediatric clients, including but not limited to:  

  • Specimen collection  

  • Height/weight and plot on growth chart  

  • Administration of medications  

  • Intake and Output  

  • Feedings  

  • Play Therapy  

  1. Utilize drug information sources to identify correct pediatric dosage, dosage forms, expected local and systemic actions of drugs, and drug side effects.  

  1. Observe and document child/parent interactions.  

  1. Adapt client teaching to meet the developmental stage and needs of the child and caregivers.   

  1. Administer medications per the “Rights” of administration  

  1. Document accurately the administration of medications given.  

  1. Safely calculates and/or converts dosages according to prescribed standards.  

  1. Implements appropriate safety measures as they relate to medication administration.  

  1. Selects and demonstrates appropriate use of equipment/supplies for administration of medications.  

  1. Obtain a medication history about the client’s use of prescription, over-the-counter (OTC), and social drugs as well as herbal and dietary supplements.
