HAC 4080 - Light Commercial HVAC

Course Description:
This course provides students with basic knowledge of light commercial HVAC system components and operation 

Student Learning Outcomes:
Safety 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of HVAC related safety issues 

Roof Top Units (RTU) 

  1. Have a basic understanding in the differences of residential and commercial HVAC systems. 

  1. Understand the need for fresh air in commercial buildings 

  1. Understand installation and service practices as it pertains to RTU’s 

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) 

  1. Have a basic understanding of the different types of VRF systems 

  1. Understand the benefits of using VRF systems over chillers and boilers 

  1. Define the key differences in VRF and Mini Split Systems 

Chillers 

  1. Understand basic chiller operation 

  1. Understand heat transfer between water and refrigerant 

  1. Understand water coils and their placement 

Comfort and Air Flow 

  1. Understand the need to control fresh air and humidity in a commercial building 

  1. Understand the use of reheat valves and their purpose 

  1. Understand the differences in air flow of commercial and residential systems 

  1. Define types of motors used in commercial HVAC and why they are different 

Building Automation 

  1. Discuss the advantages of using building automation in commercial applications 

  1. Understand the basic operation of a building automation system 

  1. Discuss the operation of building automation software and controls
