Course Description: The core material presented in this course is basically in chronological order, allowing the student to develop a strong understanding of the interrelationships involved in the family unit from time of conception through adolescence. Emphasis is placed upon normal nutrition and the importance of adequate nutrition during pregnancy, lactation, and different periods of growth and development during childhood. This course will introduce the student to the care of the well child, the child with special needs, and the child with acute and chronic healthcare needs. A strong emphasis on maintaining the dignity of the child and promoting healthy growth and development, even during illness, will be manifested. Students will also examine the role of the family and the importance of it to the care of the child.

- Describe care of the client during normal labor and delivery.
- Describe care of women with complications during labor and delivery.
- Describe care associated with cesarean delivery (c-section).

- Describe changes in maternal anatomy and physiology during the postpartum period.

- Discuss how care of the client is altered during the postpartum period following cesarean delivery.
- Describe psychological adaptation of the postpartum client.

- Discuss various types of infant feeding.
- Discuss the basic principles of growth and development, in relation to both physical and psychosocial changes, across the span of childhood.

- Identify recommended immunization schedules and techniques for administration based upon age.
- Identify safety principles in administration of medications to pediatric clients.
- Discuss how care must be altered for the hospitalized child in relation to age and developmental stage.
- Recognizes the holistic concept of care of critically ill, dying children, and the family.
- Identify common diseases and/or disorders of childhood in relation to body systems and describes etiology, signs/symptoms, and treatment unique to the pediatric client.
- Identify common communicable diseases of childhood and describes etiology, signs/symptoms, and treatment.
- Identify common pediatric emergencies and describes signs/symptoms, and treatment.
- Identify professional responsibilities of the Medical Assistant related to pediatric clients, including but not limited to:
- Legal/Ethical issues
- Child abuse/neglect
- Guardianship
- Community resources
