Course Description:
This course reviews basic laws governing the maintenance of a democratic society and how criminal and constitutional laws meet the challenge of American society.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Distinguish the differences between local, state, and federal court systems and describe the roles of those involved in the American legal system.
Examine the laws pertaining to the American legal system, emphasizing the importance of the adversary system in the legal process, including trial and sentencing.
Analyze how the various laws protect the individual and individual’s rights as an American citizen.
Cite and describe the steps in a court trial.
