Course Description: This course will introduce the principles of professional responsibility and ethics of the legal office, regulation of the legal profession, lawyer-client relationship, conflicts of interest and rules of confidentiality.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Gain an understanding of the careers that exist in the legal field.
- Describe the structure and organization of small, medium and large firms.
- Understand the operations and management of a law office.
- Identify the areas of the law office that become duties of the legal administrative assistant.
- Be able to distinguish between permissible and impermissible conduct in the legal office and common ethical and malpractice problems in a law office.
- Understand accounting principles that will be used to financially manage the legal office, to include: billing, managing client trust accounts and payroll.
- Understand records / file management in the legal office.
- Learn the importance of the law library and how to research using it.
