HIMT 1300 - Medical Terminology
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisites: Pre- and corequisites should be defined by individual institutions and must be courses from General Education Requirements - Core and Major Field Core Courses.
Course Description: An introductory study of medical terminology utilizing the body systems approach including anatomy and physiology, and disease process, laboratory/ pathology terms, pharmacology concepts, terms and abbreviations.
Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- Identify medical word roots, combining forms, the most common prefixes and suffixes.
- Explain the rules for determining singular and plural endings.
- Construct medical terms from word parts relating to the body systems: integumentary, musculoskeletal, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic and hematic (blood), respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive (male and female), nervous, special senses (eye and ear) systems.
- Construct medical procedure terms from word parts relating to the body systems: integumentary, musculoskeletal, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic and hematic (blood), respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive (male and female), nervous, special senses (eye and ear) systems.
- Pronounce medical terms and major anatomical structures.
