FOT 1022 - Plant and Soil Maintenance

Course Description:
This course will introduce students to basic plant and soil science. Topics include plant growth development, composition of row crops and pastureland, soil conservation, and environmental factors that affect crop and grassland maintenance.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- Research agriculture methods and practices and describe how each method aligns to a specific goal including the following: soil fertility and texture maintenance, adequate soil moisture maintenance, erosion prevention, and weed, insect, and disease management.
- Determine the life cycle and growth stage of plants and differentiate desirable plants from non-desirables.
- Understand the history and makeup of soil structure and develop a relationship between soil structure and plant production.
- Develop a plan of best practices for soil conservation, land management, and pest control strategies.
- Understand the importance of soil health and the best management practices to obtain consistent results in production and sustainability.
- Understand the importance of plant health as it contributes to the yield of quantity and quality in row crops, forages, and foods.
- Assess the costs and benefits of best practices in soil maintenance.
