MASS 1601 - Principles of Physiology & Pathology
Credit hours: 6
Course Description: Students will learn basic anatomy and physiology of the major body systems. Within each body system this course will cover pathologies that massage therapists may commonly encounter. Emphasis will be on understanding the impact of massage techniques on normal physiology as well as on selected pathologies and medications.
Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- Identify basic elements of normal physiology for each system of the human body
- Identify general description of selected pathologies associated with each system
- Evaluate sample intake information to determine appropriate modifications to massage goals and techniques for clients with specified pathologies
- Recognize basic pharmacology related to massage practices
- Manage intake information and reference materials to make clinical decisions for the safety & benefit of clients on medications or with pathological conditions
