FOT 4090 - Forestry Foundations

Course Description:
This course presents basic concepts of all aspects dendrology and silviculture. This course will allow students to properly identify trees and their specific uses in forestry products. This course will also allow students to learn the proper techniques used in farming forestry products and the environmental impact that occur with forestry products production, along with techniques to improve efficiency and limit those environmental impacts.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify common trees found in the Southeast US that are used in the production of forestry products.
  2. Demonstrate proper techniques for establishing and maintaining stands for trees used in forestry production.
  3. Identify potential pests and their effect on timber production.
  4. Understand the environmental impacts on soils, plants, and animals. And demonstrate proper production techniques to minimize negative outcomes.
