FOT 4100 - Forest Operations

Course Description: This course deals with basic and advanced concepts of forestry operations and the processes involved in producing, harvesting, and manufacturing forest products. This course will allow students to become familiar with terms and concepts of the forestry industry as it relates to techniques, machinery, measurements, quality, environmental impacts, and legal requirements.
Student Learning Outcomes: Course Competencies:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Understand the concepts of building and maintaining roads, landings, and stream crossings.
- Measure and Merchandise logs.
- BMPs
- Demonstrate safe and proper tree felling and delimbing techniques.
- Identify forestry equipment and their functions. And demonstrate safe and proper operation of forestry equipment.
- Demonstrate forestry cruising techniques and calculate accurate volume estimates.
- Identify industry and products that are associated with the forestry industry.
- Understand the legal issues as it relates to forestry and the importance of property lines and proper techniques in locating and marking property lines. Also, to understand the legal issue associated with timber theft and timber theft prevention techniques.
