Course Description:
This course presents an overview of corrections, including the philosophy and historical evolution behind the development of corrections. The course emphasizes the corrections procedures, current prison and jail conditions and operations, problems and needs facing correctional facilities, and related contemporary issues.

  • Describe the history and evolution of punishment.
  • Analyze the impact of sentencing on corrections.
  • Describe differences between federal, state, and local systems of incarceration.
  • Analyze the purpose of management and custody levels used in correctional settings.
  • Analyze the characteristics of incarcerated individuals.
  • Analyze the current state of jail and prison life.
  • Assess the problems faced by special needs prisoners in custody and how the corrections system needs to respond to their needs.
  • Research and summarize concepts surrounding daily life and operations in a correctional facility.
