CRJ 1078 - Defensive Tactics and Use of Force

Course Description: This course is designed to be an introduction to basic correctional defensive tactics through physical training and practice of uncomplicated movements and control of distance. Basic defensive tactics include hand and foot strikes, pressure points, control tactics, impact weapons, handcuffing and inmate transport techniques, and use-of-force plans.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate appropriate and correct use of firearms in a simulated setting
- Demonstrate appropriate and correct use of a TASER in a simulated setting.*
- Demonstrate properly handcuffing compliant and resistant subjects.
- Demonstrate appropriately searching for contraband on subjects.
- Practice hand, foot, and baton strikes on vulnerable points on the body.
- Demonstrate the ability to defend themselves in a physical confrontation.
- Analyze and demonstrate basic inmate transport, inside and outside the facility, guarding work squads, hospital assignments, and specialized inmate situations.
