WEL 3022 - Pipe Welding

Course Description:
The goal of this course is to ensure pipe welds are performed in the 5G and 6G positions and graded by AWS D1.1 criteria for visual testing, and AWS B2.1 Criteria for destructive testing using Guided Bend and Fillet Break Tests 

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate how to perform single pass fillet welds in 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G positions 

  • pipe projects with multiple welding processes 

  • Demonstrate how to perform open-root welds on various 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G positions 

  • pipe projects using multiple processes 

  • Demonstrate how to prepare a beveled surface pipe projects using various methods 

  • Demonstrate how to properly set-up and tack weld pipe welding projects in 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G positions 

  • Demonstrate how to lay-out and saw coupon pipe test straps for guided bend testing 

  • Demonstrate how to remove coupon straps using oxy-fuel torch prior to guided bend testing 

  • Demonstrate how to weld carbon steel pipe in the 5G and 6G positions (root, fill & cap) using SMAW 

  • Demonstrate how to weld carbon steel pipe in the 5G and 6G positions (root, fill & cap) using GMAW 

  • Demonstrate how to weld carbon steel pipe in the 5G and 6G positions (root, fill & cap) using GTAW 

  • Complete comprehensive written test encompassing the entire curriculum.
