AST 1021 - Engine Repair I
Clock Hours: 42
Delivery Mode on-ground
Industry Certifications NC3: Feeler Gauge-PMI
Course Description: This introductory course focuses on the fundamental concepts of engine construction, operation, and the maintenance of lubrication and cooling systems in modern vehicles. Students will learn to identify engine components, explain internal engine functions, and perform basic engine diagnostics and services. Emphasis is placed on inspection, removal and replacement of external engine parts, and routine service procedures for lubrication and cooling systems. Safety practices, proper tool usage, and interpretation of service information are integral to the course.
Student Learning Outcomes: This course supports the ASE Education Foundation’s Automobile Service Technology (AST) task list under A1: Engine Repair, with a focus on the following competency areas:
A1.I: General Engine Diagnosis
· Verify engine operation through observation and measurement (visual inspection, fluid levels, noises, smells, and temperatures).
· Interpret engine-related diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool.
· Perform compression, vacuum, and cylinder leakage tests; interpret results.
A1. II: Lubrication and Cooling Systems Diagnosis and Repair
· Inspect, service, and replace engine oil and filters.
· Inspect and test oil pressure; determine necessary action.
· Inspect and replace cooling system components, including belts, hoses, thermostat, radiator, and water pump.
· Test and refill engine coolant; bleeding system as needed.
· Perform cooling system pressure tests and use refractometers or test strips to check coolant condition.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate foundational knowledge of engine construction, operation, and service procedures related to lubrication and cooling systems. Students will identify and explain the function of engine components, perform basic diagnostic tests such as compression, vacuum, and leakage testing, and accurately interpret diagnostic trouble codes. Emphasis will be placed on safely inspecting, servicing, and replacing external engine parts, as well as performing routine maintenance on lubrication and cooling systems using proper tools and service information. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for entry-level tasks in engine maintenance and will possess the skills necessary to advance to Engine Repair II and ASE A1 certification preparation.
