AST 2015 - Electrical and Electronics I
Clock Hours: 210
Delivery Mode on-ground
Industry Certifications ASE A6 Automotive Electrical Certification. (Not required to complete course.)
Course Description: Electrical and Electronics is a foundational course in the Automotive Service Technology (AST) program that introduces students to automotive electrical and electronic systems. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely diagnose, test, and repair basic and advanced vehicle electrical systems using industry-standard tools and procedures.
Topics include electrical theory, circuit construction and analysis, wiring diagrams, battery testing, starting, and charging systems, lighting circuits, and power accessories. Students will gain hands-on experience using multimeters, scan tools, and other diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot real-world electrical problems. Emphasis is placed on safety, proper tool use, and accurate interpretation of service information.
This course supports ASE Education Foundation Task List competencies in A6 - Electrical/Electronic Systems and prepares students for ASE A6 certification and advanced-level training.
Student Learning Outcomes: ASE Education Foundation Competencies Covered:
This course aligns with the ASE Education Foundation’s Automobile Service Technology (AST) Task List, specifically addressing the following Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6) competencies:
· A6. II: Battery & Starting System
o Inspect, test, and service batteries.
o Perform voltage drop tests on starter circuits.
o Inspect and test starter relays and solenoids; determine necessary action.
· A6.III: Charging System
o Perform charging system output test; determine necessary action.
o Inspect and test alternator components; determine necessary action.
o Diagnose charging system for causes of undercharge, no-charge, or overcharge; determine necessary action.
· A6. IV: Lighting Systems and Accessories
o Diagnose and repair lighting systems (headlights, taillights, brake lights, interior lights).
o Diagnose operation of horn and wiper/washer systems.
o Inspect and test power accessory circuits (e.g., power windows, locks, mirrors); determine necessary action.
Course Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate the ability to diagnose, test, and repair fundamental automotive electrical and electronic systems, including batteries, starting systems, charging systems, lighting, and power accessories. Students will apply electrical theory, interpret wiring diagrams, and utilize industry-standard diagnostic tools such as multimeters and scan tools to troubleshoot and resolve electrical concerns. Emphasis will be placed on safety practices, proper use of tools and equipment, and adherence to manufacturer specifications. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for entry-level positions in automotive service and will possess the foundational knowledge necessary to pursue ASE A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems certification and advanced-level training.
