AST 2030 - Automatic and Manual Drivetrain
Clock Hours: 96
Delivery Mode on-ground
Industry Certifications ASE A2 Automatic Transmission. (Not required to complete course.)
ASE A3 Manual Transmission. (Not required to complete course.)
Course Description: The Automatic and Manual Drivetrain course is designed for students pursuing a career in automotive service technology. This course covers the theory, diagnosis, repair, and service of both manual and automatic drivetrain systems. Students will gain hands-on experience working with components such as clutches, manual transmissions, differentials, axles, and automatic transmissions.
The course emphasizes understanding the operation, construction, and diagnostic techniques of drivetrain systems, including manual and automatic transmissions, transaxles, differential assemblies, and their related components. Students will also learn how to conduct thorough inspections, perform repairs, and test systems for proper functionality using the latest tools and diagnostic equipment.
By the end of the course, students will be prepared for entry-level positions in the automotive repair industry and will be ready for ASE A2 and ASE A3 certification testing.
Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Manual Drivetrain Components and Systems
· A3.A.1 - Diagnose and repair clutch systems, including cables, hydraulics, and components.
· A3.A.2 - Remove, inspect, and replace manual transmission components (e.g., gears, synchronizers, bearings).
· A3.A.3 - Inspect and replace manual transmission seals, gaskets, and fluid.
· A3.A.4 - Inspect and repair drive shaft assemblies, u-joints, and CV joints.
· A3.A.5 - Inspect and service differentials, including gear backlash and pinion preload.
· A3.A.6 - Reassemble manual transmission and drivetrain components using manufacturer specifications.
2. Automatic Transmission and Transaxle Diagnosis and Repair
· A2.B.1 - Diagnose transmission concerns using appropriate testing methods (e.g., pressure tests, fluid checks).
· A2.B.2 - Inspect, test, and replace automatic transmission internal components (e.g., torque converters, clutches, gears).
· A2.B.3 - Perform fluid and filter changes in automatic transmission systems.
· A2.B.4 - Inspect, diagnose, and repair automatic transmission control systems, including solenoids, wiring, and sensors.
· A2.B.5 - Repair and rebuild automatic transmissions, including valve body and pump components.
· A2.B.6 - Test for proper transmission operation after reassembly.
3. Drivetrain Assemblies and System Functions
· A3.B.1 - Remove and reinstall manual and automatic drivetrain assemblies (transmissions, transaxles, and differentials).
· A3.B.2 - Inspect and service bearing and gear clearances in transmission and axle assemblies.
· A3.B.3 - Test drive vehicles after drivetrain repairs to verify proper operation and performance.
· A3.B.4 - Perform proper alignment and balance of driveshafts and axle components.
· A3.B.5 - Inspect, test, and repair driveline vibration issues, including torque converters and balance shafts.
4. Drivetrain System Safety and Environmental Practices
· Demonstrate proper shop safety practices, including the handling of hazardous materials.
· Follow safety guidelines for lifting, securing, and removing drivetrain components.
· Adhere to environmental protocols for disposing of fluids and used parts.
Course Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate the ability to diagnose, service, and repair both manual and automatic drivetrain systems in accordance with industry standards. Students will apply theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills to perform inspections, remove, and reinstall drivetrain assemblies, and conduct precision adjustments and repairs using manufacturer specifications and modern diagnostic equipment. Emphasis will be placed on safety practices, environmental responsibility, and professional work habits. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for entry-level employment in the automotive repair industry and possess the knowledge necessary to pursue ASE A2 and ASE A3 certification exams.
