Course Description: This course provides the student a basic knowledge of electrical theories and concepts needed in the HVACR field.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Safety
- Demonstrate an understanding of HVAC related safety issues
- Demonstrate an understanding of safety practices needed to work around electrical circuits including lockout, tag out.
- Electrical Theory
- Define electrical terms
- Discuss AC and DC circuits
- Solve Ohm’s law problems
- Discuss electromagnetism as used in the HVACR field.
- Test equipment
- Discuss the types of meters used in electrical testing
- Measure voltage, current, and resistance.
- Practice testing other electrical measurements.
- Wiring Diagrams
- Show a working knowledge of reading wiring diagrams.
- Identify electrical components and their symbol found on HVAC wiring diagrams
- Identify different types of circuits used in the HVAC field.
- Electrical distribution
- Discuss electrical power generation
- Discuss electrical power distribution
- Discuss methods of raising or lowering voltage.
- Explain how a step up transformer works.
- Explain how a step down transformer works
- Explain how capacitors are used on HVAC equipment.
- Discuss the reasons low voltage is used for HVAC controls.
- Discuss the reasons low voltage is used for HVAC controls.
