Course Description:
This course provides students with instruction on the design, installation and service of residential and commercial gas systems.

Principles of Combustion  

  1. Discuss the combustion triangle  

  1. Discuss the combustion requirements of Natural gas, L.P. gas, and fuel oil.  

  1. Discuss complete and incomplete combustion  

  1. Discuss flame characteristics.  

  1. Discuss standard furnace and condensing furnace operation and venting.  

Furnace components  

  1. Understand the different types of ignition sources  

  1. Understand gas valve types and functions.  

  1. Understand draft systems for furnaces and boilers 

  1. Understand the different styles of heat exchangers for furnaces and boilers 

  1. Understand the sequence of operations for furnaces and boilers 

  1. Understand the difference in single stage, two stage, and modulating gas valves  

Servicing Gas furnaces  

  1. Discuss measuring gas pressures  

  1. Discuss testing for proper draft 

  1. Discuss testing ignition systems  

  1. Discuss safety switches.  

  1. Discuss temperature rise vs delta T 

  1. Discuss cracked heat exchangers and replacement
