Course Description: Students are given training to achieve a Shielded Metal Arc Welder Certificate. This training includes safety, cutting process, basic shield metal arc welding, intermediate shielded metal arc welding, blueprint reading and mathematics for welders.
Student Learning Outcomes: Course Competencies:
- Upon successful completion of this course, students should:
- Have a working knowledge of basic safety practices that are universal to the welding profession.
- Be aware of the obvious dangers in a shop environment.
- Understand that welding can be hazardous or even fatal if instructions are ignored.
- Have an understanding that instructions given are to be followed.
- Know the parts of an oxyacetylene torch.
- Be aware that Acetylene must be stored and used properly.
- Know that petroleum based products must be kept clear of oxygen hoses, regulators, etc.
- Have a basic understanding of all three covered cutting processes and the specific safety concerns related to each.
- Understand SMAW equipment setup.
- Identify electrodes.
- Properly prepare and fit-up weldments to basic test code.
- Make visually acceptable and mechanically sound welds.
- Know the basic consumables used in wire feed processes.
- Have a working knowledge of safety concerns related to wire feed processes.
- Basic machine setup.
- Make visually acceptable and mechanically sound welds using wire feed processes.
