Course Description:
Students are given training to achieve a Shielded Metal Arc Welder Certificate. This training includes safety, cutting process, basic shield metal arc welding, intermediate shielded metal arc welding, blueprint reading and mathematics for welders.

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students should:
  2. Have a working knowledge of basic safety practices that are universal to the welding profession.
  3. Be aware of the obvious dangers in a shop environment.
  4. Understand that welding can be hazardous or even fatal if instructions are ignored.
  5. Have an understanding that instructions given are to be followed.
  6. Know the parts of an oxyacetylene torch.
  7. Be aware that Acetylene must be stored and used properly.
  8. Know that petroleum based products must be kept clear of oxygen hoses, regulators, etc.
  9. Have a basic understanding of all three covered cutting processes and the specific safety concerns related to each.
  10. Understand SMAW equipment setup.
  11. Identify electrodes.
  12. Properly prepare and fit-up weldments to basic test code.
  13. Make visually acceptable and mechanically sound welds.
  14. Know the basic consumables used in wire feed processes.
  15. Have a working knowledge of safety concerns related to wire feed processes.
  16. Basic machine setup.
  17. Make visually acceptable and mechanically sound welds using wire feed processes.
