LPN (pre-req) 1020 - Fundamentals

Course Description: nursing concepts and measures from the simple to the complex. The student is guided to formulate his or her identity as a beginning nursing student by a careful correlation of the biological, physical, and social sciences. Emphasis is placed upon the normal as a means of comprehending the abnormal. The comfort, safety, maintenance of health, and the recovery of the client will be stressed. The importance of the Practical Nurse as a member of the healthcare team and nursing as a social discipline is stressed. Upon completion of this course, the student should also be able to apply the principles of emergency nursing care. A planned schedule of laboratory experience allows the student the opportunity to practice and demonstrate proficiency prior to the clinical setting.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and utilize scientific principles and fundamental skills to give nursing care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe nursing practice by observing and instituting safety measures as needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge of assessment skills.
- Identify his/her role as a member of the healthcare team.
- Acknowledge the client’s rights and respect each client as an individual.
- Provide appropriate nursing care, recognizing that all clients have the same basic needs of personal care and hygiene.
- Adapt nursing care appropriately to meet the needs of the acute or chronically ill/disabled person throughout the life span.
- Utilize the nursing process to provide individualized nursing care.
- Recognize the influence of multicultural differences in nursing care.
- Utilize various methods of documentation in the implementation and evaluation of nursing care, including but not limited to the following:
- Charting by exception
- Computerized documentation
- Diagnoses, Action and Response (DAR)
- Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Planning (SOAP)
- Narrative
- Other acceptable methods
- Demonstrates appropriate nursing documentation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of client care organization and prioritization.
- Use information technology in client care.
- Apply evidence-based practice when providing client care.
- Recognize reportable changes in client’s health status.
- Accurately obtain and document vital signs on appropriate forms.
- Utilize observational, assessment, and communication skills in client care.
- Provide nursing measures designed to prevent complications of immobility.
- Complete a client assessment including:
- nursing history
- physical assessment
- height/weight
- vital signs
- Observe and demonstrate proper knowledge of the following:
- standard precautions
- isolation procedures
- Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines
- Joint Commission (JCAHO) guidelines
- Incorporate patient teaching and reinforcement as indicated by client care needs.
- Identify principles related to emergency nursing including but not limited to:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Use
- Foreign Body Airway Obstruction
- First Aid
- Identify the Practical Nurse’s role in emergency situations.
- Identify the principles of standard /universal precautions related to emergency situations.
- Recognize the Practical Nurse’s legal and ethical responsibilities, including:
- Good Samaritan Law
- Common Legal Issue
- Identify physiological and psychological needs in emergency situations.
- Identify standardized policies and procedure referring to:
- Fire
- Biohazard (i.e. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Blood borne pathogens, etc.)
- Disaster- Both internal and external
