MDA 1050 - Medical Terminology

Course Description:
This course is to teach basic medical terminology with simple definitions to introductory level medical assisting students.  These terms have been selected for the value in enhancing the students’ understanding and level of comprehension of the technical language of medical assisting in pre-clinical units of the program.  Greater detail regarding the anatomy of the individual body systems is presented with an emphasis on the relation between morphology and function. This constitutes a foundation basic to all units of the medical assisting program.

Student Learning Outcomes:
UNIT #1 BASIC WORD STRUCTURE

  1. Identify basic objectives to guide your study of the medical language.
  2. Divide medical words into their component parts.
  3. Learn the meanings of basic combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes of the medical language.
  4. Use these combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes to build medical words.

UNIT #2 SUFFIXES

  1. Define new suffixes and review those presented in previous chapter
  2. Gain practice in word analysis by using these suffixes with combining forms to build and understand terms.
  3. Identify the functions of the different types of ways to put medical words together using suffixes,

UNIT #3 PREFIXES

  1. Define basic prefixes used in the medical language.
  2. Analyze medical terms that combine prefixes and other word elements.

UNIT #4 ABBREVIATIONS, ACRONYMS, AND SYMBOLS

  1. Define and Identify Medical Abbreviations through weekly spelling quiz forms.
  2. Use proper abbreviations and symbols with medical documentation
