Course Description: Pipefitting level 1 provides an overview of work performed by the pipefitter, covers key concepts of hand tool safety, the safe operation of power tools in the generation of electricity, the safety requirements for oxyfuel cutting, hazards and safety procedures governing the use of stepladders, extension ladders, fixed scaffolds, and rolling scaffolds, and operating procedures associated with motorized equipment used on job sites.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this module, the trainee will be able to do the following:
Describe the types of work performed by pipefitters.
Identify career opportunities available to pipefitters.
Explain the purpose and objectives of an apprentice training program.
Explain the responsibilities and characteristics of a good pipefitter.
Explain the importance of safety in relation to pipefitting.
Describe the safety requirements that apply to the use of pipefitter hand tools.
Explain how to properly care for selected pipefitter hand tools.
Demonstrate how to safely and properly use selected pipefitter hand tools.
Identify tools and state their uses.
Use selected hand tools.
State the safety procedures that must be followed when working with power tools.
Cut pipe using a portable band saw.
Identify and explain the uses of portable grinders.
Explain the proper and safe operation of machines used in pipe joint preparation:
- Pipe threaders
- Portable power drives
- Pipe bevelers
Perform selected pipe joint preparation operations using power tools.
Identify and explain the use of oxyfuel-cutting equipment.
Set up oxyfuel equipment.
Light and adjust an oxyfuel torch.
Shut down oxyfuel cutting equipment.
Disassemble oxyfuel equipment.
Change empty cylinders.
Perform oxyfuel cutting:
Straight line and square shapes
Piercing and slot cutting
Bevels
Washing
Operate a motorized, portable oxyfuel gas-cutting machine.
Identify the different types of ladders and scaffolds used on a work site.
Describe how to safely use ladders and scaffolding.
Properly set up, inspect, and use stepladders, extension ladders, and scaffolding.
State the safety precautions associated with the use of motor-driven equipment on job sites.
Identify and explain the operation and use of the following motor-driven equipment.
- Welding machines
- Portable generators
- Air compressors
- Portable pumps
- Aerial lifts
- Forklifts
- Compaction equipment
- Trenching equipment
- Backhoe loaders
- Mobile cranes
- Perform prestart checks and operate the following equipment:
