PHT 1017 - Law Ethics and HIPAA

Course Description:
This course will acquaint the students with the major federal and state regulations pertaining to pharmacy practice, examine the ethical component of pharmacy care, and outline the provisions set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) which are applicable in pharmacy practice.

  1. Demonstrate understanding of how pharmacy is regulated at federal, state, and local levels.
  2. Identify the regulatory agencies which oversee the practice of pharmacy, and describe their respective functions.
  3. Identify the significant laws, regulations, and amendments which affect the practice of pharmacy.
  4. Describe the laws and restrictions which relate to controlled substances.
  5. Recognize the FDA approval process for new drugs.
  6. Identify the differences between brand-name (trade name) drugs and generic drugs.
  7. Explain patient privacy rights in healthcare settings under HIPAA.
  8. Discuss ethics within the context of pharmacy practice and healthcare. Review damage report and analyze damage to determine appropriate methods for overall repair; develop and document a repair plan.
