AST 2011 - Engine Repair 2

Clock Hours: 120

Industry Certifications ASE Certification A1 (Not required to complete course.)

Course Description:
This advanced-level course focuses on in-depth engine diagnosis, disassembly, inspection, and internal repair procedures. Building on the fundamentals of Engine Repair I, students will learn how to evaluate and service internal engine components such as pistons, rings, crankshafts, camshafts, timing systems, cylinder heads, and valve trains. The course emphasizes the use of specialty tools, and service manual procedures. Students will gain hands-on experience in engine teardown and reassembly while learning to diagnose internal engine failures.

Student Learning Outcomes:
ASE Education Foundation Competencies Covered: This course supports the ASE Education Foundation’s Automobile Service Technology (AST) standards under A1: Engine Repair, with a focus on internal engine repair:

A1.I: General Engine Diagnosis

· Interpret unusual engine noises and vibrations; determine necessary action.

· Use scan tools and diagnostic procedures to verify internal engine concerns.

A1.III: Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair

· Remove and reinstall cylinder heads; inspect for warpage and cracks.

· Inspect and replace valve springs, seals, retainers, and keepers.

· Inspect and measure camshaft, lifters, rocker arms, pushrods, and related components.

A1. IV: Engine Block Diagnosis and Repair

· Remove and inspect pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, main and rod bearings.

· Measure cylinder bore, piston clearance, crankshaft end play, and bearing clearances.

· Inspect and replace timing components (timing chains, gears, belts, tensioners).

· Reassembling engine using correct torque specs and procedures.

·

Course Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate the ability to diagnose, disassemble, inspect, and repair internal engine components in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Students will apply advanced diagnostic procedures to verify internal engine concerns, accurately measure, and evaluate engine block, piston, crankshaft, camshaft, and valve train components, and perform precise reassembly using proper torque values and service manual procedures. Emphasis will be placed on the use of specialty tools, adherence to safety practices, and the development of critical thinking skills necessary for complex engine repairs. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for entry-level technician positions requiring advanced engine repair skills and will possess the knowledge needed to pursue ASE A1 Engine Repair certification.
