MDA 2010 - Basic Pharmacology

Course Description:
The course is designed to assist the Medical Assistant in understanding their role in handling, administering, and the proper documentation involving medications.  The course will introduce the principles of Pharmacology, drug addiction and appropriate therapy based on body systems and disease.  In addition, this course will cover the most commonly prescribed pharmaceutical medications.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the key concepts of Pharmacology, drug development and drug sources
  2. Describe the drug classifications and general use
  3. Perform weekly quiz forms of the top most commonly prescribed medications, their classifications and general uses
  4. Identify and demonstrate the principals related to the administration of medication
  5. Describe the safety of administering different medications and identify and demonstrate the different routes of administration                  
  6. Accurately write prescriptions for physician approval and document accordingly in medical records
  7. Understand major drug laws and demonstrate knowledge of drug addiction/dependence within the healthcare profession as well as general population
  8. Distinguish the generic and proprietary names of some commonly used drugs
