Course Description:
This course offers a practical exploration of clinical procedures utilized in a physician’s office.  Included are the skills necessary for:  implement sterilizing instruments and equipment, set-up and assisting with pap exam and/or minor surgery, Venipuncture/capillary puncture, sight and hearing screenings, electrocardiograms, emergency first aid, standard precautions as they relate to blood-borne pathogens, and the knowledge and skills to accurately perform routine laboratory tests commonly performed in a physician’s office.  .

Student Learning Outcomes:
UNIT  #1 OPHTHALMOLOGY/OTOLARYNGOLOGY

  1. Identify the anatomic structures of the eye and ear
  2. Differentiate among the major types of refractive errors
  3. Summarizes among the major types of refractive errors
  4. Perform a visual acuity test using the Snellen chart
  5. Asses color acuity using the Ishihara test
  6. Describe the conditions that can lead to hearing loss
  7. Use an audiometer to measure a patient’s hearing acuity
  8. Demonstrate the procedure for performing eye and ear irrigations
  9. Accurately instill medicated eye and ear drops
  10. Summarize the nose and throat exam and perform a throat culture

UNIT #2 ASSISTING IN ORTHOPEDIC CARE

  1. Differentiate among tendons, bursae and ligaments
  2. Identify and describe the common types of fractures
  3. Differentiate among the various joint disorders
  4. Apply cold therapy to an injury
  5. Assist with heat application 
  6. Explain the use of common ambulatory devices, properly fit a patient with crutches

UNIT #3 SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS

  1. Describe typical solutions and medications used in minor surgery
  2. Summarize methods for identifying surgical instruments used in minor office surgery
  3. Identify surgical instruments
  4. Describe the general classifications of surgical instruments
  5. Describe the care and handling of surgical instruments
  6. Identify drapes and different types of sutures and surgical needles

UNIT #4 ASSISTING IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

  1. Prepare for and assist with the female examination
  2. Teach the patient the technique for breast self-examination
  3. Compare the positional disorders of the pelvic region
  4. Summarize the process of pregnancy and parturition
  5. Describe the common complications of pregnancy
  6. Specify the signs, symptoms, and treatments of conditions related to menopause

UNIT #5 ASSISTING IN PEDIATRICS

  1. Discuss developmental patterns and therapeutic approaches for pediatric patients
  2. Identify four different growth and developmental theories
  3. Summarize the immunizations recommended for children by the CDC
  4. Demonstrate how to document immunizations and maintain accurate immunization records
  5. Compare a well-child exam and a sick-child exam
  6. Measure infant head circumference
  7. Obtain accurate length and weight measurements and plot pediatric growth patterns
  8. Accurately measure pediatric vital signs
  9. Correctly apply a pediatric urine collection device

UNIT #6 SAFETY AND EMERGENCY PRACTICES

  1. Identify environmental safety issues in the healthcare setting
  2. Discuss fire safety in a healthcare environment
  3. Demonstrate the proper use of a fire extinguisher
  4. Role-play a mock exposure event and evacuation
  5. Maintain an up-to-date list of community resources for emergency preparedness
  6. Summarize typical emergency supplies and equipment (crash cart)
  7. Demonstrate the use of AED
  8. Demonstrate telephone screening for managing emergencies
  9. Perform CPR
  10. Discuss cardia emergencies and administer O2 through nasal cannula
  11. Discuss  CVA and assist a patient who is in shock
  12. Determine appropriate action for common office emergencies (fainting, poisoning, animal bites, insect bites, asthma attacks, 
  13. Perform first aide for a patient with a fractured wrist
  14. Discuss burns and tissue injuries and how to control a bleed
  15. Discuss nosebleeds 
  16. Diabetic emergencies (perform first aid procedures for patient with a diabetic emergency)

UNIT #7 ASSISTING IN PULMONARY MEDICINE

  1. Teach a patient how to use a peak flow meter
  2. Administer a nebulizer treatment
  3. Detail patient teaching for the use of a metered-dose inhaler
  4. Perform a volume capacity spirometry test and a pulse ox procedure
  5. Discuss collection of a sputum sample for culture

UNIT #8 PRINCIPLES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY

  1. Explain the concepts of cardiac polarization, depolarization and repolarization
  2. Identify the PQRST complex on an ECK tracing
  3. Describe the electrical views of the heart recorded by the 12-lead electrocardiograph
  4. Interpret a typical electrocardiography tracing
  5. Perform ECG
  6. Summarize cardiac diagnostic tests and fit a patient with a holder monitor

UNIT #9 ASSISTING IN THE ANLYSIS OF URINE

  1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the urinary tract, along with the processes of filtration,         reabsorption, and elimination.
  2. Discuss collection containers and various means and methods used to collect urine
  3. Instruct a patient in the collection of a 24-hour urine specimen
  4. Instruct a patient in the collection of a clean-catch midstream urine specimen
  5. Examine and report the physical aspects of urine
  6. Perform quality control measures on the accuracy of test based on the takes taken for quality assurance
  7. Test and record the chemical aspects of urine using CLIA-waived methods
  8. Prepare a specimen for microscopic evaluation
  9. Explain and perform the following tests
    1. Glucose testing
    2. Urine pregnancy test
    3. Urine toxicology and drug screening

UNIT #10 SURIGCAL ASEPSIS AND ASSITING WITH SURGICAL PROCEDURES

  1. Explain the differences between sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization
  2. Demonstrate how to prepare items for autoclave sterilization
  3. Demonstrate how to wrap materials and discuss the types and uses of sterilization indicators
  4. Summarize the correct methods of loading, operating and unloading an autoclave
  5. Explain how to perform skin prep for surgery and how to perform a surgical hand scrub
  6. Perform the following:
    1. One a sterile pack and create a sterile field
    2. Transfer sterile instruments and pour sterile solutions into a sterile field
    3. Demonstrate how to apply sterile gloves
  7. Explain how to remove sutures and staples
  8. Explain the process of wound healing and dressing changes
  9. Explain how to properly apply dressing and bandages to surgical sites

UNIT #11 VITAL SIGNS

  1. Do the following related to temperature
    1. Cite the average body temperature for various age groups
    2. Describe emotional and physical factors that can cause body temperature to rise and fall
    3. Convert temperature between Fahrenheit and Celsius scales
    4. Obtain and record an accurate patient temperature using three different thermometers
  2. Do the following related to pulses
    1. Cite the average pulse rate for various age groups
    2. Describe pulse rate, volume, and rhythm
    3. Locate and record pulse at multiple sites
  3. Do the following related to respirations
    1. Cite the average respiratory rate for various age groups
    2. Demonstrate the best way to obtain an accurate respiratory rate
  4. Do the following related to blood pressure
    1. Cite the approximate blood pressure range for various age groups
    2. Specify the physical factors that affect blood pressure
    3. Differentiate between essential and secondary hypertension
    4. Describe how to determine the correct cuff size for individual patients
    5. Identify the different Korotkoff phases

UNIT #12 ADMINISTERING MEDICATION

  1. Document the administration of a medication accurately in the health record
  2. Summarize patient assessment factors that can affect medication administration
  3. Identify various drug forms and their administration guidelines, and administer oral drugs
  4. Do the following related to parenteral administration of drugs:
    1. Specify parenteral administration equipment, including details about needles and syringes
    2. Describe and demonstrate the types and locations of parenteral administrations with proper use of sharps containers (this is to include sub-cutaneous, intradermal, deltoid and gluteal injections)
    3. Describe and perform mixing of different types of insulin
    4. Describe and perform pulling up a med from an ampule
    5. Describe and perform reconstituting a powdered med 
    6. Describe and perform proper administration of a vastus lateralis injection
