    Course Description:
    This course introduces the basic properties, testing and inspection of construction materials and the methods of production of these materials. Topics include an introduction to basic concepts of strength of materials and properties of construction materials such as aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, and wood; their proper application; performance of standard tests on construction materials and the preparation of proper technical reports on test results. 

    Student Learning Outcomes:
    Students will be able to:

    • Perform calculations based on properties of materials: thermal expansion and conductivity, stress and strain, elastic and plastic properties, modulus of elasticity, and specific gravity.
    • Record and report results and understand how test results affect application of building materials.
    • Perform standard tests according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.

  
  • CIVT 2400 - Hydrology/Site Design-Civil 3D



    Credit hours: 3

    Course Description:
    An advanced level course designed to use students’ prior knowledge of drafting, surveying, and hydrology in the subdivision and development of property. Topics include storm water runoff and water and sewer systems, street pattern variables and intersections, site planning, utilities, and earthwork calculations. Students will be required to present work using Civil 3D software.

    1. Layout parking for various commercial applications
    2. Estimate the amount of storm water runoff at various point on a piece of property

  • CIVT 2450 - Construction Management



    Credit hours: 3

    Course Description:
    The class is an introductory class on construction management.  Emphasis is on construction management procedures.  Student will gain knowledge about topics including responsibility and authority, construction documents, contracts, construction law, safety, planning and scheduling, materials and workmanship, and change orders.

    Students will be able to:

    • Understand the concepts of construction documents and specifications
    • Recognize the different types of contracts

  • CIVT 2500 - Soil Mechanics



    Credit hours: 4

    Course Description:
    This course covers basic soil mechanics including index properties of fine and coarse soil, soil classification, stress analysis, permeability, compaction, strength concepts, and settlement/compressibility.  The laboratory covers standard ASTM soil tests.

    Student Learning Outcomes:
    Students will be able to:

    • Perform standard tests according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.
    • Learn how to measure basic properties of soils.
    • Analyze and interpret lab data and develop good technical reporting and data presentation skills.

  
  • CIVT 2550 - Advanced Surveying

    Course Description:
    This course is a continuation of the concepts and practices of surveying.  Surveying equipment such as theodolites, electronic distance-measuring equipment, global positioning system and robotic total station.

    • Demonstrate proper techniques for traversing, compute area, and creating a topographic map.
    • Explain legal and ethical aspects of surveying.

    Course Description:
    The course will cover principles of mechanics and material behavior related to building structures including force systems, frame analysis, section properties, stress, and basic analysis, design and detailing of steel, reinforced concrete, and wood structures.

    Students will be able to:

    • Navigate the AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI code, and ANSI/AF&PA WFCM for analysis and design of basic structural components.
    • Perform basic calculations for structural analysis and design and analyze various steel, wood, and reinforced structural concrete components for failure.

The purpose of learning support is to enhance academic success in technical college programs and increase the likelihood of program completion that will prepare students for career success in their chosen field of study.
